The classic love story “Cyrano de Bergerac” has never looked more romantic, courtesy of director Joe Wright and costume designers Massimo Cantini Parrini and Jacqueline Durran. Wright’s musical film, adapted from a recent stage production of the 1897 play, stars Peter Dinklage in the titular role. Every costume was crafted specifically for the film, and Parrini created more than 750 costume pieces from scratch to reflect France in the early 1700s. The designer was particularly inspired by 18th-century watercolors, as well as “extreme” contemporary fashion. “In my costumes, I find the need to insert modern elements to make the pieces truly unique,” he says.

Oscar-winner Cillian Murphy repeated his Best Actor win at the Academy Awards for Oppenheimer with a win for Lead Actor. In the supporting categories, Paul Mescal won for All of Us Strangers and Alison Oliver topped all for Saltburn. Cena did end up coming onstage with nothing but a large envelope covering his private parts. Since he couldn’t move the envelope to open it, there was a quick cut and he re-appeared wearing a curtain-like golden toga. Costume designer Gersha Phillips did an immense amount of research exploring the history of the Agojie, the all-female unit of warriors who protected the African Kingdom of Dahomey in the 1800s. Her research brought forth beautiful textiles and fabrics that perfectly support an amazing cast (led by Viola Davis) as the audience dives into the heart of Dahomey and West Africa.

This movie is set on a farm in Northern Ireland where two estranged brothers are forced to spend time together following the death of their mother. "An Irish Goodbye" has won the Oscar for best live action short film.
Miloš Forman’s Amadeus won a staggering eight Academy Awards at the 1985 Oscars, including Best Costume Design. Oh, that has to go to the concert attire worn by Tom Dulce’s Mozart during the “Abduction from the Seraglio” sequence. Laurence Olivier’s Hamlet had the distinction of being the first film to win an Oscar for Best Costume Design (Black-and-White) at the 21st Academy Awards. The eloquent outfit worn by Oliver’s titular character throughout the iconic William Shakespeare adaptation is so simple yet so effective.
Sunday’s 96th edition showcased that throughout the day, with nominees and attendees wearing dazzling fashion and accessories. William Wyler’s Roman Holiday is one of the best movies of all time, thanks in part to the outstanding performances from Gregory Peck and Audrey Hepburn. Even though Peck’s Joe Bradley doesn’t immediately recognize Hepburn’s Crown Princess Ann in this romantic comedy, you can’t miss the coolness of the reporter’s suit throughout the movie.
